Is it time to unmask?
I have recently read quite a number of books on the topic of neurodiversity including Unmasked by Ellie Middleton.
As a mum of neurodiverse children it enabled me to understand how it feels to exist in a world built by neurotypical people when you have a brain that works differently.
Whilst I had a specific interest in reading it, I’d say it is essential reading for us all. We are all unique individuals with brains that work in different ways which means we all see things differently, we all verbalise things differently, we all look different to one another and we all act in different ways.
Unmasking and being 100% yourself takes courage and confidence. It’s not easy when you’ve grown up thinking you need to fit in and have been socialised to behave and present yourself in a certain way. (One of the statistics that stood out for me is how many negative messages an average Autistic/ADHDer child receives – 20,000!).
I find myself encouraging clients to unmask on a daily basis, albeit it in a much smaller way, too. If you’re someone that chooses clothes to hide in or fit in it’s time to stop. It’s time to choose clothes that show other people who you really are. To dress for YOU!
It’s not about fashion and it’s not about us all needing to look the same. For me, it’s instead about being curious about clothes, working out what your natural style personality type you are, what you like and dislike and celebrating our differences. And if clothes aren’t your thing at all I honestly completely understand (that’s me with cooking!). I love making it easy for people to have a wardrobe that works specifically for them, whether it’s full to the brim of unique pieces that you put together in your own way based on your mood that day or whether you prefer a neat, structured wardrobe that more resembles a capsule wardrobe – one with less clothes but still plentiful outfits.
I’m not a prescriptive tick box stylist. I’m a warm and friendly person who is genuinely only happy when you feel you can unmask and wear clothes that work for YOU. If I can help you just give me a call 07917 663330 or drop me a line: contact Kerrie.
