If you’re someone who likes to follow the trends, you’ll know brown is (still) a big colour trend. This is great if it’s a colour you like and/or shades of it are in your colour palette, but sometimes the colours that are current aren’t ones that do you any favours. So here are some outfit ideas that might spark some inspiration whether brown is in your colour palette or not.
If you have LIGHT colouring, then a dark brown worn on it’s own may appear too heavy. Pairing it with a light colour, like a light pink, cream or light blue as shown in the first three outfits below is a great idea. Think about the undertone of colour that suits you best – the cool pink and blue may be best if you have Light+Cool colouring and the cream may be best if you have Light+Warm colouring, for example. You could always choose a lighter brown shade too of course, like a taupe, cocoa or tan rather than the deepest browns.
If you have DEEP colouring, then brown is a great colour for you to wear up near your face. You’ll find that the warm chocolate browns will work best if you have Deep+Warm colouring and the deeper black-browns will work best if you have Deep+Cool colouring. It’s totally up to you whether you wear it as a block colour on it’s own or pair it with another deep or bold colour, like the fuchsia pink and brown outfit in the bottom image.

If you have WARM colouring, browns are a great neutral for you to choose. Depending on the depth of colour that suits you best, you might like the lighter sandy or tan browns or you may like the deeper chocolate browns. For you, it’s all about making sure that you pair your brown with other warm-toned colours. You might like outfit 2 above or the first outfit in the image below, for example if you have Warm+Smokey colouring. If you have Warm+Bright colouring then maybe the second outfit in the image below with the bright warm red and highly patterned cardigan will appeal?

If you have COOL colouring, your browns need to be cool-toned, so things like black-brown or grey-browns like mink, will work nicely. If you have Cool+Bright colouring you might like to pair your dark brown with a fuchsia pink, for example, as per outfit three above. Or you could create a highly contrasting look of a light cool colour paired with a deep cool colour as per outfits one and three in the first group of outfits above. If you suit Cool+Smokey colours then simply pair your cool browns with the more subtle pinks, blues, purples etc.
If you have BRIGHT colouring, then for you it’s about creating highly contrasting looks of light and dark colours or wearing bright colours. If you have Bright+Warm colouring you might like the outfit with red top and the patterned cardigan, for example. If you have Bright+Cool colouring then the highly contrasting outfits pairing a lighter colour with a dark colour will work well. Think about whether you’re likely to remove the deeper outer layer though as leaving a pale colour on its own up near your face doesn’t work so well.
If you have SMOKEY colouring, you generally suit mixes of mid-depth colours best, worn in a tone-on-tone way. If you have Smokey+Warm colouring you might like the second outfit in the top image or the first image in the second image perhaps. If you have Smokey+Cool colouring you’ll look your best in gentle cool browns mixed with other cool tones.
