CONFIDENT ‘BODY TALK’
Body language, (or ‘non-verbal communication’), is very powerful. We are programmed to instinctively read and trust what we see over what we hear. If your body language reveals that you lack confidence or are feeling uncomfortable about what you’re saying, those listening to you will receive that message loud and clear and question the validity of your words.
Body language is something that we explore in the Personal Branding training days that I deliver at part of my other business: The Image Advantage. It forms a big part in how others perceive you.
You’ll no doubt recognise the picture of the 2012 ‘dragons’ from the Dragons Den above. So what does their body language say about them? Would you feel comfortable coming into a room to present to them? Hilary Devey has a powerful ‘hands on hip’ stance, which exudes confidence (but can be intimidating), whilst Deborah Meaden and Duncan Bannatyne have adopted the closed ‘arms crossed’ gesture. I think I’d personally rather take my chances with Peter Jones who appears confident and at ease, presenting a more open but less threatening pose, with his arms by his side.
So, what does your body language say about you? Do you exhibit ‘confident body talk’ to ensure that you get heard? Does it support your personal brand?
