…IT’S NOT JUST BODYSHAPE THAT MATTERS…
At the Colour Me Beautiful conference earlier this month, we had an excellent session on proportions. Knowing whether your waist is proprtionally high, low or balanced and then how long your rise (the area from your waist to crotch) is, can make a huge difference. If you’ve ever put on a waisted dress only to find the waist in the ‘wrong place’ for you, or tried trousers on but felt uncomfortable because they didn’t come up high enough (or came up too high), or find yourself always leaving things tucked out but aren’t sure why, then the chances are you are high or low waisted.
The picture above shows some of my colleagues demonstrating where their waistlines are .. the variance is vast (even taking into account height differences). You can see Veronique (far left) and Beth (3rd from left) are both high waisted – their natural waistlines aren’t much below their bust. Tucking in is a no no for them! Pat (2nd left) and Mandy (right) both have proportionally lower waists – i.e. they are longer in their body. For them minimal detail on trousers and wearing open fronted shoes will be good as it will make their legs look longer and so give balance. Why not take a look at yourself in the mirror and see how balanced your body is. Or sit next to someone of similar height to you and see who looks the tallest sitting down – that can be even more enlightening … Mandy looked ‘head and shoulders’ taller than Beth when she sat down and yet their height difference is negligible… it’s all a matter of proportions!
Just thrown in for good measure, here’s a couple of shots of me from the conference ‘modelling’ some of the latest seasonal trends – heritage (the jacket I’m wearing is from LK Bennett) and florals (this was a definite no no for me given the size of the pattern – I think Pat’s face says it all!).
