AUTUMN ROUND-UP:
Ok, well we’ve definitely been witnessing some autumnal weather lately (it’s rained on and off all day today!), so now’s the time to update your capsule wardrobe with some key pieces in the new season’s colours, shapes and themes. Here’s a round-up of the cat-walk trends followed by a quick look at what’s on the high street.
This season key colours are red, purple, berry shades, pink and emerald. They may not all suit you, although purple is a universal colour that everyone can wear, so pick out the ones that do and add them in to your core capsule. By adding purple shoes, a red dress and maybe an emerald silk top – like the LKB one shown later – you have an instant but wearable update to your wardrobe. All of which would go with core basics in neutral colours.
Some of the themes include baroque, vivid florals, leather, heritage/country life and dark romance. Admittedly the florals are rather ‘out there’, but team a floral shirt with a plain bottom half and you can make them work. Add something with embroidery for the baroque theme or pick it up in the shape of a shoe like the black Somerset one below. The Country life theme could be easily interpreted with a tweed jacket or skirt, a hacking style jacket, jodhpurs or riding boots (just not all together or you might get asked where you parked your horse!). Dark romance mixes sheer fabric, lace and leather in a rather fierce look, so if it’s not one for you just play with the fabrics in a more subtle way.
Trousers were on every catwalk, either slim legged and often patterned with matching jacket or wide leg Katherine Hepburn style seen at Ralph Lauren. If you are going for a skirt the shape is full – done beautifully at Christian Dior – and shown below by Zoe Hoda at John Lewis.
Finally if you need a new winter coat the shapes are cocoon, capes, military and wrap.
